Joan Marie Johnson joined the Office of the Provost in December 2015.

As the Senior Director for Faculty, Joan leads faculty support and development programming, including career development and faculty leadership programs for faculty at all stages of their career. Additionally, her portfolio includes the One Book One Northwestern program and the Office’s relationship with the Northwestern Emeriti Organization.

Prior to joining the Office of the Provost, Joan taught women’s and gender history at Northeastern Illinois University. She has written extensively about the history of women and gender, social reform, education and philanthropy. Her most recent book is The Woman Suffrage Movement in the United States, a text for college courses. She is the author of "Funding Feminism: Monied Women, Philanthropy, and the Women’s Movement, 1870-1967," "Southern Women at the Seven Sister Colleges: Feminist Values and Social Activism, 1875-1915" and "Southern Ladies, New Women: Race, Region and Clubwomen in South Carolina, 1890-1930" and is co-editor of the three-volume series "South Carolina Women: Their Lives and Times." She was the co-founder and co-director of the Newberry Seminar on Women and Gender at the Newberry Library in Chicago.

Joan earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Duke University and her PhD in History from UCLA.
